Episode 46: Tokusatsu with @Tokuswag

I’m joined by @Tokuswag for an exciting, action-packed episode all about the Japanese genre of “tokusatsu” which my guest helpfully describes as essentially anything where a guy in a rubber monster suit gets beat up. Western listeners will probably be most familiar with the genre via Power Rangers, which used footage from the Japanese Super Sentai shows intercut with footage using American actors.

The series we reference in the episode is Seijuu Sentai Gingaman available for streaming via Shout Factory. (The attractive female villain is played by Mizutani Kei.)

The podcast I refer to is the Super Senpai Podcast and the podcast my guest appears on is the Rider Love podcast.

The trailer for Kamen Rider Satoh Takeru’s Ruroni Kenshin with english subtitles is available here.

Filmi Girl

I’ve been a fan of Asian pop culture for over 20 years and want to help bridge the gap between East and West. There is a lot of informal (and formal) gatekeeping that goes on and I’d like to help new fans break through the gates.
