Episode 83: On the Life and Death of Liam Payne with Monia
Liam Payne passed away on October 16, 2024, and the response to his death has been the typical social media era mixture of heartbreaking and ghoulish. Monia and I had been sending messages back fast and furious about it so we decided to just podcast it all out.
You can check out my mega-episode on the History of the Boy Band here.
Monia’s first appearance on the pod goes into detail on her experience as a “boogeyman” and you can listen to that here.
Some of the things we discussed were:
The slimiest “music” and gossip journos now doing glowing tributes.
Trailer for This is Us, the Morgan Spurlock-directed documentary film.
The trailer for The Idea of Us, based on the Harry Styles-Older Woman fanfic.
Monia’s post that talks about the Book-tok/Hockey meltdown.
My post on K-Pop stan vocabulary.
Liam’s ex-girlfriend Maya Henry had gone public earlier this year with allegations of abuse.
“Strip That Down” hit number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017.
Scooter Braun, CEO of Hybe USA, discussing how his teams create fan army accounts and how the fans running those accounts go on to work in the business.
Child Star (2024) is streaming on Hulu and worth a watch if you are a subscriber.
The Milli Vanilli documentary is also worth watching.
As is the 2017 Avicii documentary.
The Liam-Gary Barlow connection.
Female hysteria turned mob violence is not cute.
Excellent post from Active Faults on fan engagement.
Since we recorded, Zayn has postponed his USA concert tour dates.
